A Strabane man who performed a “diffing” manoeuvre around a garda patrol car before leading them on a half hour 160km chase has been jailed for six months at Letterkenny District Court.

Shaun Lynch of 50 Bellstraw road, Strabane was charged with dangerous driving at Galdonagh Manorcunningham, Raymoghy, Manorcunningham, Carrickdawson, Raphoe and Main Street St Johnston on December 14, last.

When gardaí stopped the BMW car driven by Lynch he “diffed around them” narrowly avoid the car and led them on a 50km chase where he crossed onto the wrong side of the road and did not stop at junctions. He was eventually brought to a stop with the use of a stinger. Solicitor Patsy Gallagher said his client’s acts were “utter madness” adding he was a “Jeykell and Hyde character” when driving. Lynch also had surgery for a brain tumour and was on a lot of medication but was fully co-operative with gardaí.

Judge Paul Kelly said this type of driving was “completely intolerable” and jailed him for six months and disqualified him from driving for six years.
