The campaigning group Our Children’s Voice has welcomed the HSE decision to subsidize flights for children with life-limiting conditions or high medical needs to travel to Dublin for treatment.

Discussions are ongoing to develop the criteria that must be met for children to avail of the service from Donegal Airport, Gina Grant of Our Children’s Voice said. The group first raised the issue with the HSE some weeks ago and discussed it most recently last Friday with senior HSE staff.

“We would have preferred to wait until the flights had become available, but good news is hard to keep in,” Gina said.

She said the parents were grateful to the HSE, “who respect the fact that we are bringing our children’s voices into the decision process that will ultimately make life easier for them and their families”. She said they were also grateful to Donegal TDs, “who are accessible for advice and help on matters that we bring to each of them”.

Pearse Doherty, Sinn Féin TD, said, “It should not be underestimated what this decision means to all the families and loved ones of these young children.”
