A quick thinking bus driver managed to evacuate up to 40 school children safely from his vehicle after it caught fire this morning.

The incident happened at approximately 8.30am near the Mountain Top area of Letterkenny, on the main road adjacent to the Thornberry housing estate.

The bus was carrying students from the Creeslough/Kilmacrennan direction destined for secondary schools in the town.

Once the driver noticed the problem he stopped the vehicle and all passengers were evacuated from the vehicle and no one was injured in the incident.

The area was closed temporarily as fire services brought the situation under control.

There were long tailbacks in both directions due to the incident.
