A businessman was knocked unconscious and robbed in broad daylight in Letterkenny as he went to deposit cash at a bank.

A businessman was knocked unconscious and robbed in broad daylight in Letterkenny as he went to deposit cash at a bank.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to the assault and robbery which occurred last Friday in a car park just off the town’s Main Street.

The man had parked in the car park at around 1.30pm and was approaching the bank when he was knocked unconscious from behind.

He was noticed lying face down between parked cars by a passer-by.

Taken by ambulance to hospital

The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital where he spent a short time before it emerged that he had been robbed.

An empty money bag was found at the scene.

Making an appeal for witnesses, Inspector Pat O’Donnell described the incident as nasty and violent.

Speaking on Highland Radio, Inspector O’Donnell warned business people to take extra precautions when making cash lodgements.

He said CCTV from the scene is being viewed and the man’s vehicle has been examined.

He said it was a very busy time and there were a lot of people in the area when the assault occurred.

“It is a very serious incident and it is an escalation of this type of crime.” he said.

The inspector said it is believed that more than one person was involved in the incident.

He appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to come forward.
