Call for Seanad process to start again
There has been a call for the by-election process for the vacant Seanad seat on the education and cultural panel to be started again.

There has been a call for the by-election process for the vacant Seanad seat on the education and cultural panel to be started again.

Reform Alliance Sen. Fidelma Healy-Eames told RTÉ yesterday that she believed the by-election for the seat vacated by recently elected MEP Deirdre Clune was in disrepute.

Fine Gael nominated John McNulty of Kilcar for the seat.

It emerged this week that Mr. McNulty, 37, was appointed to the Irish Museum of Modern Art board six days before Fine Gael nominated him for the Seanad.

Mr. McNulty, who manages a shop in Stranorlar, ran unsuccessfully for Donegal County Council in May, polling 816 first preferences.

Minister for the Arts, Heather Humphreys, defended her nomination of Mr. McNulty to the Imma board, saying he brought 15 years’ business experience, was involved in the local cultural and tourism committee in Kilcar, and “has a track record in promoting culture, heritage, the GAA and the Irish language”.

Mr. McNulty, could not be reached for comment by the time of going to press.
