The Diamond in Donegal Town is becoming a familiar venue for many victorious Donegal heroes returning late into the night to their home county.
We have seen Jim and the lads with Sam and the Anglo Celt, our ladies with their own All Ireland and now young Gerard Byrne with his World Irish Dancing Championship title for the second time.
Gerard was welcomed on to the Diamond by hundreds of friends, family, classmates and quite a few bewildered tourists as he was led up Quay St. by the Ardaghey Pipe Band.
Speaking about Gerard Paula McNeilis of the McNeilis School of Dance said, “This really could have been three in a row for Gerard had not an unfortunate trip in Boston last year relegated him to second place which was no mean achievement in itself.
“We have worked hard over the last year to achieve this and with his determination and passion, I have no doubt that he will indeed make that hat-trick next year.
“He is just the perfect student - no matter what we ask of him he just does it - there are no “I can’t” or “I’m not able to” he just gets on with it.
“I would like to thank everybody most sincerely for their support and patience - Ger’s family, our own families and everybody here tonight for this great welcome -Donegal has indeed very many reasons to be happy!”
The young Ballydevit man is a student at the Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town and has proved himself a deft man on his feet. Not only does he capture the odd world championship on the dance floor but features regularly with both the Four Masters and Donegal Town FC.
No doubt we will be seeing Gerard featuring in quite a few more homecomings on the Diamond.
