A county councillor has described a induction seminar for newly elected councillors which could cost Donegal County Council more than €5,000 as “a complete waste of money”.
Independent councillor Dessie Shiels has called into question the attendance of all 37 councillors at the induction seminar for newly elected members in the Sligo Park Hotel on Tuesday June 17th. He said with the cost per head of around €140 each, the total could be as much as €5,180.
The Letterkenny councillor said the proposal to send the councillors came from the Department of the Environment and not the council or councillors. The new legislation can be viewed on line and there is no point sending councillors to the seminar to have it explained to them, he said.
“I am, to be honest, seething with anger at the thought that potentially €5,000 of public monies could be spent in such a wasteful manner,” he said.
