Speaking after a Topical Issue Motion Debate with Minister James Reilly by all four opposition TDs in Donegal to discuss the need for a Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist to be appointed to Letterkenny General Hospital, Donegal Sinn Féin TDs Pearse Doherty and Pádraig MacLochlainn said they welcomed the favourable response from Deputy Thomas Pringle and Deputy Charlie McConalogue to their suggestion that they join them in the Topical Issue Motion put before the Dáil in recent weeks in order to have this issue raised with Minister Reilly.
“We recognise also that even though Government TDs did not put their names to the Topical Issue Motion, nevertheless they are sympathetic to the concerns of parents on this issue,” Deputies Doherty and MacLochlainn said.
“The fact that four opposition TDs were united in presenting this issue on behalf of the parents of children with Diabetes in Donegal added significant weight to the matter and this was not lost on Minister Reilly.
“We welcome the interest that Minister Reilly showed to this matter and some of the comments he made in response were positive, suggesting that he was willing to consider the matter further, listen to the concerns of parents and take appropriate steps to address these.
“However, it is important that these words are followed up with actions at this point. Parents of children with Diabetes in Donegal have been campaigning long and hard for adequate resources for their children and there is a strong case for the appointment of a specialist nurse for children with Diabetes.
“We welcome the fact that a meeting has been arranged between Minister Reilly and a delegation of the parents next Tuesday, which we will also attend and we are hopeful that this issue may be resolved once and for all,” they added.
