MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher has urged the Government to reconsider its decision not to apply for EU Solidarity Funding for storm damage
“While I welcome the Government announcement to provide EUR 70 million in assistance, I am disappointed to learn from the Government statement that they may not apply for EU Solidarity Funding, in view of the fact that the damage is below the threshold for assistance.
“The fact of the matter is that the application submitted in 2009 following severe flooding that year was also below the threshold. However, the then Government submitted a regional based application, which ultimately proved to be successful when Ireland received EUR 13 million.
“I urge the Government to reconsider its decision and to apply for funding before the closing date of the 21st of February, as confirmed to me last week by the office of the EU Commissioner for Regional Development, Johannes Hahn.”
