I relay for many reasons but the first and the most important being in memory of my wonderful, gentle and kind mother who passed away on the April 5, 2000.
I relay as a result of the huge impact losing her has had on my life and my family’s lives. I relay in gratitude to the night nurses that cared for her so compassionately and respectfully in her final days, so that she could die at home in her own bed, surrounded by those who loved her.
I relay to convey sympathy to all those that have lost love ones to cancer.
I relay to highlight that 20 people each week are diagnosed with cancer in Donegal.
I relay to show support to those who have recently been diagnosed and to those currently undergoing treatment.
I relay to celebrate with those that have survived.
I relay because the emotions and feelings I experienced at the opening and closing ceremonies of Relay for Life 2013 had a profound effect on me.
I relay to help raise awareness and the much needed proceeds to help fund cancer services in Donegal.
I relay because I can and there isn’t any reason why I shouldn’t.
For 2014, I relay as a committee member, because last year as a team member I remember thinking at the closing ceremony, wouldn’t it be great to be even more involved and have an even more active role in what is a truly remarkable event. When I was asked to consider the role of PR/Marketing manager, I accepted it with pride and enthusiasm.
Last summer I took up jogging. One day one of my neighbours said to me “when I see you running, you make me want to walk”. By the same token, I hope that my involvement in Relay for Life 2014 (and the involvement/participation of so many others from Donegal and surrounding communities) will encourage others to get involved, whether it be to form a team, be a member of a team or come along to the event at Letterkenny Institute of Technology on the weekend of May 31 to June 1.
An information night for those interested in participating in Relay for Life Donegal 2014 will be held at the Mount Errigal, Letterkenny on Monday, January 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
