The 24 hour action started at 7am this morning - it’s the latest escalation in a dispute between doctors and the HSE over working hours.

More than 3,000 doctors are taking part in the move following a long running dispute with the HSE over working hours. The doctors’ dispute centres on the need for them to work shifts exceeding 24 hours and working weeks which can exceed 100 hours. These working hours are in breach of the European Working Time Directive which says workers should not have to work more than 48 hours a week on average.

Doctors have agreed to provide weekend cover for in-patients and emergency care.
