An investigation is underway into the death of a man at Buncrana Garda Station.

It is understood that the man, who was in custody, was found dead at the station in the early hours of this morning.

He has not been identified and no information has yet been given about the manner of his death.

The Garda Commissioner has asked the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission to carry out an investigation in accordance with section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005.

This is standard procedure in circumstances such as these a spokesperson for the Ombudsman said.

A post mortem is due to be carried out this afternoon.

Donegal North East TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn told the Democrat: “Any death of a person in garda custody is a cause for public concern. “The law is now in place, though, which means an independent investigation is automatically carried out. This should give the public confidence that the full circumstances of the death will be fully and independently investigated.

“My heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased man at this sad time.”
