The trial of an Inishowen man charged in connection with a car crash that claimed eight lives will take placein January 2014, Letterkenny Circuit Court heard this week.

Shaun Kelly of Hill Road, Ballymagan, Buncrana faces a charge of dangerous driving causing the deaths of eight men at Meenaduff between Clonmany and Buncrana on the Inishowen peninsula on 11 July 2010.

Counsels for both the prosecution and defence advised Tuesday’s sitting of the court that there was still a number of “reports outstanding” and the case could not proceed.

Judge John O’Hagan was told there were several family members of the deceased men in court.

He said he could not comment on any aspect of the case, but added he could understand the “grief experienced” by all parties.

In an effort to “spur on” the case to a conclusion, he said he would fix the case to be heard at the Circuit Court for next January.

“It must get on in January,” he told the legal representatives.

After he fixed the hearing, the family members sitting in the public gallery left the court building.

The men who died in the crash were Hugh Friel, 66; Mark McLaughlin, 21; Paul Doherty, 19; Ciaran Sweeney, 19; PJ McLaughlin, 21; James McEleney, 23; Eamon McDaid, 22 and Damien McLaughlin, 21.
