An ongoing problem of the theft of copper telecoms wire from poles in the Fanad area need to be tackled, a special meeting of Donegal County Council has heard.

Up to 2.5kms of copper telecoms wires has been stolen in the Fanad area recently, according to Councillor Liam Blaney.

He said the thefts are part of an ongoing spate of thefts of the telecoms wire in the area. Up to 2.5km of the wire was stolen in the Portsalon area recently.

He said the added problem this caused in the community was that it effected many elderly people who rely on “panic button” systems used in conjunction with a telephone system, that were left inoperable when the wire was stolen. This placed them in an even more vulnerable situation, he stated.
