Employees of Donegal County Council have the lowest rates of absenteeism of local authority workers in the country, new figures show.
The report from the Local Government Audit Service show that absenteeism rates among local authority staff are twice that of workers in the private sector, and are higher than in the Health Service Executive or the civil service.
Workers at Limerick City Council had the highest rate of absenteeism taking an average of 17 sick days a year.
Donegal County Council workers have the lowest rate with an average of nine days off. The council said it has already taken on board the recommendations of the report, in the context of significant change within the sector, and continuing staff reductions.
The figures for the council are based on a total workforce of 959 wholetime employees. Of these, 275 employees took zero sick days in 2011. This equates to almost 30% of overall staff. Another 625 employees (65%) availed of five days or less sick leave in 2011. The council said it recognises that a small number of employees were absent on Sick Leave for long periods during 2011.
