A fantastic programme of events is taking place this weekend in Annora’s Pub, Narin in aid of the Colin Polland Foundation.
The Colin Polland (CP) Foundation was established in 2013 by the extended family and friends of the late and much loved Colin Polland, who lost his life while trying to save another.
The CP Foundation aims to remember Colin and his indomitable spirit through music and art, to raise funds for his family to relocate to Northern Ireland and to contribute to the ongoing education of his children.
Colin was the son and step-son, of Thomas Polland and Ann (Toner) Polland, proprietors of Annoras bar in Narin.
Tragically, Colin lost his life in a drowning accident this summer at a quarry near Newcastle, Co. Down.
He was 39 years of age.
On a Saturday evening in June, Kevin O’Hare got into difficulties after going to swim with his 17-year-old brother Liam and their cousin Phillp McGrillen (24).
They tried to rescue him but were not successful and sought help.
Colin was walking with his wife Adele and also attempted a rescue but he quickly got into difficulties in the extremely cold, deep water.
His wife and two policemen all entered the water but were unable to save either of the men.
Adele Polland told the inquest in August that she had to turn back because the coldness was starting to overcome her.
“I made a decision that I did not want my children to lose two parents,” she said.
Coroner John Leckey said Colin “lost his life heroically trying to save the life of Kevin O’Hare”.
He added: “I would recommend that his bravery is recognised posthumously in some way.”
Please support this weekend’s fundraisers. The full programme of entertainment is set out in the panel below.
