A record female blue shark weighing 143lbs was caught , and safely released, during the recent three-day 23rd Annual Shark Festival in Downings. It was boarded on the ‘Misty Dawn’ angling boat skippered by Alastair Mc Ilwaine.
A total of eight sharks were caught. The bottom fishing was rewarding throughout the weekend with good catches of whiting, red, grey, and tub gurnard along with ling, scad and dogfish. A rare reef cod weighing 7 lbs was also boarded. Mackerel continue to be quite elusive in the area and shoals were sporadic.
