The death has taken place of Vincent Boyle of Carrickboy, The Rock, Ballyshannon.

The former Garda Sergeant passed away peacefully, at the age of 89, at The Shiel Hospital on Thursday August 8. Hundreds attended both the removal to St. Joseph’s Church, The Rock, on Sunday night and funeral mass on Monday, August 12.

A native of Narin, Vincent joined the guards in 1945. He served in Dublin, then Buncrana and Moville before moving to Ballyshannon in 1967.

Fr Frank McManus said Vincent “excelled by his common sense approach”.

He added: “Vincent went about his work in a quiet way, he was never heavy handed.”

A talented gaelic footballer, Vincent played with Ardara, the Garda Club, and represented Donegal at senior level.

A trustee of both Narin & Portnoo and Bundoran Golf Clubs, he “had a lovely, easy swing”, a fellow golfer from Narin recalled. “He never hit the ball hard but it always travelled a long distance”.

David Robinson of Bundoran Golf Club said he was “an exceptional golfer, with a 1-3 handicap and “an absolute gentleman.”

He is survived by his wife Peg, son Conor and daughters Kathleen, Ita and Marie. A son, Kevin, passed away many years ago.
