The efforts of local people to bring out the best of Ballyshannon will be in the national spotlight this evening, when one of RTÉ’s flagship programmes, Local Heroes, devotes and entire episode to the Erne-side town.

Joe Duffy shares stories about the how the town is fighting back after being badly hit by the recession.

He pays a visit to the recently opened local museum, which has been created by volunteers. They’re hoping that the project will help attract more tourists to the town and encourage them to stay and explore the local area, as well as being an important resource for local people.

The museum has been opened this year to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the creation of Ballyshannon, the oldest town in Ireland.

Local Heroes goes out at 8.30pm on RTÉ One.

The programme will also be screened tonight at 8pm and 10pm in Dicey Reilly’s function room. There will be food, music and poetry to enjoy as well.
