Upgrade of hospital still being pursued
The reorganisation of the country’s hospitals into six groups will not affect Letterkenny General Hospital’s chances of being upgraded to regional status, a government TD has said.

The reorganisation of the country’s hospitals into six groups will not affect Letterkenny General Hospital’s chances of being upgraded to regional status, a government TD has said.

The Letterkenny hospital, along with Sligo Regional Hospital, has been placed in the West/North West hospital group which will also include University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park University Hospital, Mayo General Hospital, Portiuncula Hospital, and Roscommon County Hospital. National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) has been announced as the academic partner for the group.

The Sligo and Letterkenny hospitals will be added to the already established Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group.

The groups will be largely autonomous and the reorganisation is aimed at improving outcomes for patients. The hospitals will share services and staff and the plan is to convert the groups into independent hospital trusts in 2015.
