The Danny McDaid Athletics Track at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny was officially opened on Saturday evening by former Irish international runner and RTE pundit, Jerry Kiernan.

Despite the inclement weather, a large crowd attended the ceremony and were treated to a top class track and field meet after the formalities.

Hopes were high that the first ever Donegal sub four minute mile would be posted at the event, but race winner, Sawe Joathon Kiplimo crossed the finish line in 4:01.6.

Speaking after the event, Danny McDaid said: “While the weather might not have been kind to us, it was a great occasion. It was lovely to have so many of my family and friends here for the occasion.”

A marble statue of the double Olympian was unveiled at the opening.
