Pádraig MacLochlainn, Sinn Féin TD for Donegal North East, called a threat to the future of the A5 upgrade “absolutely unthinkable”. He also said the proposed dual carriageway is “vital for the economic regeneration for Donegal and the North West region”.
Deputy MacLochlainn and his party colleague, Donegal South West TD, Pearse Doherty, on Tuesday expressed concerns over news that a High Court judge in Belfast had revealed his intention to quash a decision to proceed with the project. The judge cited a failure to carry out an appropriate assessment of the impact on special areas of conservation (SAC) around two rivers, but gave the northern department an opportunity to make further submissions.
Lawyers on both sides are expected to return to court next week for a final resolution to the case.
