While 101 estates in Donegal are exempt from the household charge on the basis of being unfinished or ‘ghost estates’, just 49 are exempt from the property tax, according to a list the government published this week.
Thomas Pringle, TD, Charlie McConalogue TD and Cllr. Patrick McGowan all say the number should be much higher.
Cllr. McGowan told the Donegal Democrat/People’s Press, “When I see the intolerable conditions that people are having to live in - with raw sewage bubbling up from the ground in Greenfields in Convoy, or running down across the street right next to a school in Dromore Park in Killygordon, or with a derelict farmhouse and an open swimming pool half-filled with rainwater in the middle of Blue Cedars at The Park in Glenfinn - then I can’t for the life of me understand how the government can tell residents, ‘there’s nothing wrong with your estate and you have to pay property tax on your houses’. It’s unfair.”
