A Donegal band has emerged as the winners of the Guinness Arthur’s Day - “Play on the Day” competition in association with Hot Press and 2FM.

The Rathmullen/Ramelton based “In their Thousands” which includes Ruari Friel, Aidan and Dec McClafferty and Liam Kelly, beat off stiff competition from some of the top emerging acts in the country to take top spot at the famous Whelan’s Rock venue.

2fm’s Dave Fanning and Dan Hegarty were broadcasting live from the Roadcaster outside. Dave Fanning said “Fair play to all of the bands for putting in great performances throughout the competition. Once again, it shows there is some serious quality music being made in this country.”

“It was a really tough call for the judges,” Niall Stokes, Editor of Hot Press commented. “But “In Their Thousands” were absolutely brilliant. The feeling among the judges was that this is a band with huge international potential. They are superb musicians making a truly original and epic noise.
