A 28-year-old hiker from Co. Carlow was rescued 12 hours after falling at Slieve League Cliffs on New Year’s Day.
Arthur Kee, officer in charge of Killybegs Coast Guard, described the operation as “the biggest multi-agency rescue and the most difficult” that he has seen in 22 years.
The hiker used his mobile phone to alert gardaí after he fell 350 metres, at around 1pm, while crossing a particularly steep section of terrain.
Around 50 volunteers helped with the rescue, which saw the hiker finally being winched to safety at around 12 midnight.
