One of the most novel sights ever greeted more than 1200 fans who attended Killea man Kevin McHugh’s testimonial game at a freezing Finn park on Friday night.
Despite the bitter cold there were smiles all around as a Donegal All Ireland side took on a Finn Harps select in a game of two very different halves - one soccer and one gaelic.
Dubbed the ‘Battle of the Hills’ it must have been a dream come true for the marketing people at Donegal Creameries who sponsor both sides and for Kevin it was a fitting tribute night watched by his family and friends and loyal team mates who have journeyed with the likeable Killea man over ten years at Finn Park.
McHugh, who has played 11 of his 15 pro seasons at Finn Park said he was grateful to all who made the game possible - “It was played in a really good spirit. I’m very grateful to everyone who helped to organise this night,” he said.
The Donegal team won the novelty match on a combined soccer and GAA score of 3-7 to 1-8.
Meanwhile, a testimonial dinner in Kevin’s honour will take place tonight in the Radisson Hotel, Letterkenny.
