Donegal County Council says its controversial purchase of a house in Ballyshannon had not been completed before the house was destroyed by fire earlier this month.
The house at Parkhill was to be handed over to a Traveller family after its sale had been agreed for 233,000 euro.
The proposed sale had been criticised by local councillors including Sean McEniff who said Travellers should be segregated from the settled community.
But the council says that while the contract for the acquisition of the house had been signed by the vendor on January 12th, “vacant possession” was not to take place until February 11th. The house was destroyed by fire that morning.
