This Wednesday an expected 2,073 students from across the county will begin their written Leaving Certificate examinations. The number of candidates to sit the exam this year in this county has increased by 48, with 2,025 having sat the same examinations in 2011. An increase can also be seen in the number of students who are sitting the Leaving Certificate Applied with 176 sitting the exam this year in comparison to 148 in 2011.
More females than males will undertake the Leaving Certificates this year too, 1,052 commpared to 1,021 males. More males than females took the exams in 2011 with 1,077 males to 1,128 females. Throughout the country 53,789 students will face into the exams which will define the course of their college life should they chose to take the academic route.
Third year students from across the county will be bracing themselves for their Junior Certificate examinations with 1,071 females and 1,157 males expected to undertake the exam. Across the country, 59, 684 will take the examination in total.
Throughout the country, 43,771 will take the Irish examination, 17,424 at higher level, 22,899 at ordinary level with 3,488 taking foundation level. Candidates whose first language is neither English or Irish are allowed to use a bi-lingual translations dictionary in certain examinations with 3,388 candidates opting to use the aide in 2011.
An increase can be seen in the number of students opting to take European languages with 278 expected to sit the Lithuanian examination in comparison to 254 in 2011. The same trend can be seen in the number of students who have opted to sit the Polish exam with 739 sitting it this year in comparison to 574 in 2011.
These are predicted entry figures and are subject to change. Results for the 2012 examinations will be available in school on Wednesday, August 15. They will also be available on www.examinations.ie on that date. Junior Certificate results will be available at schools in mid September.
