TesCo PLAN approved

TESCO has been granted planning permission for a petrol filling station on the site of the Letterkenny Shopping Centre.

TESCO has been granted planning permission for a petrol filling station on the site of the Letterkenny Shopping Centre.

It is the latest attempt by the British retail giant to develop the site where it has its only Donegal store.

Letterkenny Town Council granted planning permission with 20 conditions in the face of objections from local businessmen Eddie Tobin and Paul Sweeney.

The granting of a previous application for a petrol filling station at the site was turned down by the town council in 2003.

Mr. Sweeney, who runs Sweeney’s Spar Express at Ballyraine, has claimed the new filling station will cause at least ten redundancies at his business.

Mr. Tobin, who runs Tobin’s Service Station on the Port Road, has raised concerns about traffic congestion at the busy Station roundabout.

He confirmed that he would be appealing the decision to An Bord Pleanála.

“I have had two applications successfully appealed to An Bord Pleanála so if I got three out of three there would be something wrong,” he said.
