There will be a Silent Walk tonight at 6pm in support of Cregg House residential care centre, Sligo.

The walk is in protest against HSE funding cuts which, according to the Sisters of Wisdom who operate the facility, may result in its closure. The Order say they cannot deliver the services they are contracted to for the HSE within the budget the HSE is providing. The Order says cuts mean a €1.3m funding shortfall this year. Speech and language therapy services have already been curtailed and Cregg House has been unable to provide a psychology service for some time.

One parent of a severely autistic boy told the Donegal Democrat: “I’m encouraging everyone to take to the streets to protest these cuts. People have been passive, taking it on the chin but that time has passed. “There comes a point when you have to speak out, loud and clear.

“These cuts are affecting the most vulnerable people in society, the people who, in many cases, do not have a voice to speak up for themselves. We all need to speak out for them.”

The walk starts at 6pm Abbey Street Car Park and finishes at Sligo Town Hall.
