High Court judge refers Pringle case to Europe

A High Court judge has referred a case brought by Donegal South West TD Thomas Pringle to the European Court of Justice.

A High Court judge has referred a case brought by Donegal South West TD Thomas Pringle to the European Court of Justice.

Ms Justice Mary Laffoy today refused to grant him an injunction preventing the government from ratifying the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) Treaty.

The Treaty is one of the mechanisms that would regulate further EU bailouts of Eurozone countries.

The government had expressed its intention to submit the Treaty to the final stage of ratification today.

Justice Laffoy said in court yesterday, however, that Deputy Pringle had raised an issue which would need to be decided by the European Court of Justice.

The injunction, she added, wouldn’t be required because whatever the European Court of Justice decision turned out to be, it would be binding on the member states.

She said she would publish full details of the issue to be ruled on shortly.
