McBrearty is new Donegal Mayor

Labour party Councillor Frank McBrearty has been elected as the new Mayor of Donegal.

Labour party Councillor Frank McBrearty has been elected as the new Mayor of Donegal.

The Raphoe based County Councillor was elected on Monday evening with all councillors, except Fianna Fail members voting for him.

Fianna Fail proposed their own candidate, Cllr. Rena Doherty, as the only opposition but this was defeated 17 votes to eleven.

Labour Party Cllr Martin Farren became Deputy Mayor despite Fianna Fail proposing Cllr Patrick McGowan.

Following the elections there was a round of applause for the newly elected Mayor.

Cllr. McBrearty vowed to represent all the people of Donegal as mayor.

There was also a warm round of applause for outgoing Mayor Cllr. Noel McBride who thanked his council colleagues for their support over the last year.
