Donegal South West TD Pearse Doherty (SF) has welcomed news that the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whave invited members of Donegal Island’s Committee to make a presentation of their Donegal Islands Survival Plan.
He said: “The Donegal Island communities rely on fishing as their main industry, which has been dramatically impacted as a result of fishing policies implemented in recent years.
“The fishermen on the Donegal islands have seen a steep decline in their income as a direct result of these policies, which has led to increased emigration from the islands and an erosion of their small communities.
“I am delighted that the Donegal Island’s Committee have been given the opportunity to present their proposals for the sustainability of their fishing industry to the Oireachtas Joint Committee.
“While no date for this meeting has been set, the breakthrough is important for the Donegal Island’s Committee in ensuring that their proposals are heard.
“The Donegal Island’s Committee have put forward progressive, reasonable and well researched proposals, which would see fishermen on the Donegal Islands retain their traditional livelihoods, while still respecting the ecological sustainability of the marine environment.
“I call on members of the Oireachtas Joint Committee to ensure that the invitation to the Donegal Island’s Committee is issued without delay and that their proposals are taken on board to protect the future of our offshore islands’ population and industry.”
