A 21-year-old trainee mechanic has been charged with the manslaughter of journalist Eugene Moloney.

The 55-year-old reporter, who had close ties with Donegal, was attacked in the early hours of Sunday morning as he was walking to his Dublin home after attending a friend’s stag party. He was struck in the head and collapsed. After receiving medical treatment at the scene, he was brought to St James’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

His family have confirmed that he will be laid to rest in Fahan, next to his mother Peg, later this week.

Gary Burch of Kennington Close, Templeogue, made no reply when he was charged at Kevin Street garda station yesterday. He then appeared at Dublin District Court where Judge Victor Blake remanded him in custody until next Monday, July 2.
