The Rape Crisis Centre Unit in Letterkenny is looking to recruit between eight and ten volunteers who would assist them in their work for a year. It is envisaged that the volunteers will provide psychological support for victims of assaults at the sexual assault treatment in Letterkenny following a vital training course.
Manager Donegal Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre, Sara Donovan said: “We do have volunteers who come in for three and six month periods, but ideally we would like volunteers to stay with us for a year. At the moment we are looking to increase the number of volunteers we have. At present, we would like to find volunteers who would go into the sexual assault treatment centre in Letterkenny and provide treatment for those who need it.”
At present there are around ten volunteers who work with the centre on an ongoing basis. At the moment two volunteers are working on a rota on a weekly basis.
“If we have more volunteers trained we could then place them on the rota for one week in five or once a month. We provide the training. We recently identified this gap and we would like to do our utmost to fill it. Our immediate need is to provide support for those in the sexual assault unit. The volunteers work very hard at what they do and we would like to provide them with time off when they require and need it. The work at times may be daunting and we do our best to facilitate our volunteers. At the moment some volunteers have taken time out and they need to take time off,” she said.
The training that will be provided will be specific and focused on the issue at hand. Training will consist of precisely 72 hours over six half days. The training will be divided in a manner of two, three week periods, a break will divide the two three week periods. Those who would like to volunteer at the centre will undergo an interview and they will be placed in the area most suited to them.
Anyone who would like to volunteer for this rewarding work at the centre may call the Donegal Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Centre at 074 91 28211. They will then be sent an application form that they fill out before they return it to the centre.
