A recreation area in Letterkenny is being used every weekend for a “drinking orgy” it has been claimed.

Letterkenny’s Gartan field is to get a face-lift after a motion was passed at the town council.

Fine Gael town councillor Jimmy Kavanagh called for the local authority to carry out general repair and maintenance work at Gartan Field,

Cllr. Kavanagh told the May meeting of the council that the work that needs to be done as part of a general tidy up includes strimming, fences repaired and painting lines on the basket ball court. “There has not been anything done for a few years now. It is part of our parks and the council needs to look at it and see what can be done,” he said.

Mayor Gerry McMonagle said the work could be carried out by the Letterkenny Community Development Project if the town council supplied them with the materials.

Fianna Fáil councillor Tadhg Culbert fully supported the motion. He said there are other things that need to happen in that area as well. He said the Community Development Project have to go in and clean broken bottles after every weekend because of the “drinking orgy” that happens there every weekend. “I brought it to attention of gardaí and they have done nothing about it. Something needs to be done because people are coming in every weekend and making a mess of it. Before we spend any money we need to deal with this problem.”

Independent councillor Tom Crossan said if the council does such work in one area other areas, such as McNeely Villas, will have to be looked after in the same way.

Fianna Fáil councillor Victor Fisher said that if the park was used more there would be less vandalism.

Cllr. Kavanagh said he would fully support the idea of workers from the CDP carrying out the work if the council supplies the materials.

He said it would be great to get the work done early in the year.
