An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD is set to visit Donegal next Monday during a whistlestop tour of the county and will take some time out to visit a school in the north of the county which has just won a major national IT award.
The Taoiseach will visit Loreto Community School in Milford at 3pm on Monday next in recognition of the school’s achievements in winning the National Smart Class Iniative which was run for the first time this year by Intel Ireland, Steljes and The Educational Company of Ireland.
Shaun Sweeney, a Leaving Certificate student at the college prepared, designed and presented an e-book which “blew away” the judges when it was deemed the winning entry.
A spokesperson for the school said, “We are very excited to have won this competition and this exceptional prize will transform the fundamental basis of how we teach and learn here at Loreto Community School.”
The school has won a complete technology package for the incoming first years students including a Fizzbook laptop for every student enrolling in first year at the school with accompanying software optimised for education including the Smart Classrooom Suite and full digital curriculum content for the entire Junior Cycle.
The competition was originally launched by An Taoiseach in May 2011 and attracted a lot of attention from both students and schools throughout the country.
Sources in Fine Gael have indicated that the Taoiseach will use this opportunity to carry out a whistlestop tour of the county where the main focus will be on campaigning for a Yes vote in the upcoming referendum on the Fiscal Treaty.
It is understood that Mr. Kenny will visit Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town, the Twin Towns, Letterkenny and Milford before departing to Monaghan on Monday night.
