Despite the fact that 3,000 less people turned out to see Alexandra Burke in Donegal town last night than Jedward who played there last year, organisers say they are “more than happy” with the numbers who turned up last night.
An estimated 2,000 turned up last night to see the 2008 X Factor star perform - and what a performance. “It was amazing,” one woman told us. “She was lovely, no nonsense, just a really down to earth lady and a very talented singer,” the fan from Dunkineely stated.
This morning Ernan McGettigan, one of the key people behind bringing the Donegal Live event to Donegal town commented: “I wouldn’t say we are disappointed (with the attendance), definitely not, far from it.”
“She put on an amazing show and with 2,000 people there we were happy with those figures. We expect to draw good crowds to the other music events tonight and tomorrow - we are offering amazing value for money and our ethos is to give people that value for money and a really good experience, so we are happy with how things are very going.”
A garda spokesperson confirmed that last night was a good natured, trouble free night in the town: “We had the usual one or two public order issues, nothing we wouldn’t see any other Friday night, so for the numbers here it was good humoured and friendly.”
Tickets for tonight are 10 euro and tomorrow night the same, with Goats Don’t Shave (tonight) and the Saw Doctors tomorrow night likely to draw big numbers. Meanwhile, the double marquees near the pier, showing off everything that is good about the county are expected to be thronged again today and tomorrow and Mr McGettigan said “some of the exhibitors are offering stunning products that reflect what is truly wonderful about this county”.
Traffic restrictions are in place (see www.donegaldemocrat.com -Lifestyle section) and be aware that the Diamond will also host a stage of the Rás Ireland today so it promises to be a very busy spot - and with temperatures only slightly lower than yesterday, it looks set to be a scorcher.
