Cllr. Barry O’Neill has put forward a proposal before a Special Meeting of Donegal County Council that a new policy be included in the Donegal County Development Plan 2012 – 2018 to prohibit the practice of Hydraulic Fracturing within County Donegal.

Cllr. O’Neil, Fine Gael, said at the Special meeting on Monday to discuss the new County Development Plan that “it is very important that a policy be added to the new County Development plan and he proposed the following wording: “It is a policy of Donegal County Council that the process of Hydraulic Fracturing (or fracking) will not be permitted within the County of Donegal. Therefore, this Council will not allow the intrusive shale gas extraction practices”.

The Ballyshannon Councillor added that he makes his submission so as to protect Public Health, Agriculture and Tourism. The wording proposed by Cllr. O’Neill relating to the practice of Hydraulic Fracturing will now form part of the County Development Plan Draft that goes out to the Public for final consultation.

Cllr. O’Neill has called on the public to support his motion through the final stage of the County Development Plan over the next two months, in advance of the final plan being approved before June 2012.
