Zack Gallagher from Donegal Town has been short-listed in the Bord Gáis Social Media Awards.

The finalists were announced on Tuesday and Zack, a food columnist for the Donegal Democrat, is one of the nominees for the Best Business on Twitter Account for Marketing or Sales Award.

The awards recognise Irish businesses and organisations that approach social media with innovation. ‘Best Business on Twitter’ is a new category designed to pay tribute to the increasingly important use of Twitter as a business tool to develop new customers.

Zack said he was happy to be included in this particular category. “There are only three other food businesses in this category so I am delighted to be in with the best in Ireland.”

The other food businesses in this category are @CuriousWines a national Wine Importer, @BordBia (the Irish Food Board) and Lorraine Fanneran @ItalianFoodie, who is one of the longest established foodies, on Twitter, here in Ireland.

Zack’s Irish Food Guide website and Blog, are a mix of Irish food news, reviews of artisan food products, recipes, guest chefs, and more. “My online readers are people around the world who are interested in all things Irish, especially the wonderful food products and places on the island of Ireland” he says.

“Twitter is a great way for businesses, large and small, to generate new customers and to engage in an informative, yet casual way with their existing clients. Some companies are only getting used to new forms of media interaction but most businesses worldwide now Facebook and Twitter to keep up to pace with their competitors.

“Online, I encourage people to buy their food from locally produced and sourced suppliers. In the past 20 years, Irish chefs have re-ignited a love of using locally sourced, and more importantly locally produced, ingredients.

“Our lush green grassland is key to the production of Ireland’s famous butter, cheeses and other great dairy foods. Irish beef and lamb are second to none. With the Atlantic Ocean on our doorstep, our fresh sea fish like mackerel, hake, John Dory, monkfish, turbot, lobster, mussels, oysters and prawns are top class. Prepared seafood products, including smoked salmon and trout, are world famous. We have a vibrant food producers’ network here in Ireland and growing online food network.”

The 2012 Social Media Awards will be held in Dublin’s Mansion House on May 17.
