An amendment to widen a proposal, which called for an extension of the Letterkenny town sewer system to the Bonagee area, to include a number of other estates failed to receive a seconder at Monday night’s meeting of the Town Council.
Proposing the original motion, Councillor Ciaran Brogan said they should approach the design team of Donegal County Council with a view to extending the sewer to Bonagee.
“A lot of residents in the area are annoyed and frustrated and feel they’re being let down,” said Cllr. Brogan who referred to the close vicinity of the main sewerage treatment plant.
“We should ask the design section to look at it. If the job’s not done now, God knows when it will be done.”
Seconding the proposal, Cllr. Jim Lynch said he was a resident in the area and was only too aware of the problems that lay ahead in relation to septic tanks.
Echoing the view on the close proximity of the main sewer station, he said: “The geography of the area does not lend itself to septic tanks.
“For instance, there’s a lot of seepage onto the dual-carriageway,” maintained Cllr. Lynch who said people would have to upgrade their septic tanks at a considerable cost.
Proposing his amendment, Cllr. Dessie Larkin said the Bonagee situation represented only the “thin end of the wedge” and there were five or six other estates which could be looking for an extension to the town sewer.
Bonagee was, he agreed, a “stone’s throw away” from the new treatment plant with a very high cluster of houses requiring the proposed upgraded septic tanks.
Cllr. Brogan, however, said he did not wish to amend his original proposal, pointing out that it would only push the bar higher. He asked councillors to focus for the moment on the Bonagee situation.
Cllr. Larkin’s amendment to include other areas in the proposal to extend the town sewer failed to receive a seconder with the member expressing “disappointment” at the outcome.
The remaining councillors agreed to support the original proposal for an approach to the design team with regard to extending the sewer to the Bonagee area.
