An eighteen year old youth was knocked unconscious after having a bottle thrust in his head during a savage assault in Lifford in the early hours of Sunday morning. The teenager is also understood to have had his fingers broken during the violent exchange.

The incident, which took place at the Beechwood Grove housing estate, is said to have involved a number of young men and a woman.

The youth, who resides in Strabane, but is believed to be originally from the Lifford area, was the victim of what was described as a fracas which broke out at the estate around 4.a.m.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the young man was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital from where he was due to be released yesterday.

Gardai were also alerted to the incident but up to yesterday no-one had been charged in connection with it. The scene was cordoned off as investigations continued into the assault.

“We have yet to speak to the young man but we believe it was the result of a melee that broken out,” a spokesman said.
