It is not everyday of the week that young schoolgirls are invited to afternoon tea with the President of the country but two young girls had the pleasure when they met with President O’hUiginn at his residence in the Phoenix Park last week.
The eleven lucky girl guides and their leaders from Donegal, Sligo and Mayo were part of a delegation from the Irish Girl Guides that were received by President Michael O’hUiginn at Áras an Uachtaráin on April 10 last.
The group included two guides from Raphoe Royal School Guides along with their leader Doris Magee; two Brownies from Belleek Pack in Ballina, Co. Mayo along with one of their leaders; two Ladybirds from Tireragh Ladybird unit from Co. Sligo and two senior branch members, one representing Tireragh and the other Raphoe.
Geraldine Kiely, Regional Commissioner for the NW Region and Tireragh Guide leader who was also in attendance said: “It was a real honour to meet the President. We got shown around the Aras.
“The girls really enjoyed it. The highlight of course was getting to meet the President.”
As an organisation the Irish Girl Guides celebrated its centenary last year.
