An Óige, the Irish Youth Hostel Association, announced that Errigal Hostel in Dún Lúiche has been awarded European Union ECO Flower Label.
The flower label is an environmental accreditation recognised throughout Europe for its commitment to sustainable tourism and protection of the local environment. The Errigal Hostel staff, with the help of the An Óige Environmental Group, met a long list of strict criteria to achieve this honour.
The purpose-built Errigal Hostel had €3 million invested in it in recent years to make the accommodation as modern and sustainable as possible. Among the hostel’s sustainable elements are an energy-efficient wood pellet boiler, energy-saving lighting, water-saving measures and the composting and recycling of most materials. Environmentally friendly cleaning products are used in the hostel and the cost reductions can be passed on to customers.
“Guests are happy to ‘go green’ too and are encouraged to play their part,” said Julie Ann Ennis, marketing manager of An Óige. She said that involvement enhances a guest’s stay at the hostel while keeping the hostel eco-friendly.
The 60-bed Errigal Hostel is located at the foot of Errigal and right on the Ulster Way.
