The ‘Donegal Democrat’ will be the recipient of two prestigious awards after the paper was named this year’s winner of the Irish Water Safety’s ‘Media Appreciation Award’ for its coverage of water safety issues and social diarist, Gabrielle McMonagle was selected for one of the Rehab Donegal People of the Year awards.
The ‘Democrat’ will be presented with the appreciation award in Dublin later this month for consistently covering topical water safety issues to help reduce drownings.
Lauding the newspaper for its approach, Irish Water Safety Marketing Executive and Deputy C.E.O., Roger Sweeney spoke of the importance of highlighting such issues as efforts continue to cut down on incidents of fatalities in our waters.
The Donegal Democrat has played its part in its coverage of water safety issues,” he maintained.
Minister Phil Hogan will present the award at the Irish Water Safety’s national annual awards ceremony in St. George’s Hall in Dublin Castle on Tuesday November 22nd.
Meanwhile, Democrat diarist, Gabrielle, who apart from establishing her unique slant on Donegal life has also raised huge sums of money for charity as a result of fund raising functions over the past few years, will receive the Rehab award at its annual ceremony in the Abbey Hotel in Donegal Town on Friday November 25th.
To add to the potential honours list, the ‘Democrat’ food writer, Zack Gallagher has been short-listed for an Eircom Spider ‘People’s Choice’ award for his work in developing a food blog, the Irish Food Guide. The Eircom Spider Awards is an annual event honouring Irish individuals and organisations The winners will be announced at an event in the Convention Centre, Dublin, this evening.
