Gardaí in Letterkenny were yesterday questioning a man in relation to a serious assault in the town on Tuesday afternoon.

A man was left in intensive care with a serious head injuries after the assault in the Ard O’Donnell area of the town. His condition yesterday was described as stable. It is understood the man was attacked in the house by a man who used a bottle or glass.

Gardaí were notified of the incident by ambulance paramedics who responded to the incident at around 4pm.

The scene was preserved overnight and was being examined by scenes of crime officers yesterday.

A spokesman at Letterkenny Garda Station said: “A man was removed to hospital and he is still in intensive care. We are following a certain line of inquiry and there is a man detained in relation to it.”

Letterkenny town councillor Jim Lynch, who is originally from the area, said residents had been shocked by the incident in what is usually a very quiet area. He said he does not remember any kind of a dispute happening there before.

“Ard O’Donnell is a very old residential housing estate and for years hasn’t changed much but since the Celtic Tiger, old established families have moved away. This has come as a complete shock, it was a very quiet family estate for so long.”
