This Saturday, September 3, two hardy walkers will be joined by some of their local friends in an attempt to walk across the ten islands off the Donegal coast.

Weather permitting, financial consultant Joe Coyle and Garda Sergeant John McGroary, who are both keen walkers, will be joined by locals from the village of Mountcharles in an attempt to walk across ten islands off the coast of Donegal all in one day.

As they cannot as yet walk on water, the two lads will be supported at sea by Eamonn O’Donnell and his rib, The Discovery.

This 10 Islands Challenge will start at dawn on Inishboffin, going on to Inishdooey, Inishbeg, Inishirrer, Inishmeane, Gola, Owey, Inishkeeragh, Inishfree and ending on Rutland at dusk.

The two men are taking on this challenge in aid of the Mountcharles Community Development Fund.

Joe Coyle said, “In these times of financial malaise and economic downturn the people of Mountcharles have decided that ‘enough is enough’.

“They have joined forces to change things for the better in their village and plans are in place to set up three small museums, each displaying the rich heritage of Mountcharles - embroidery, stonemasonry and literature.

“A tourist centre, a children’s playground, a skate park and a café are all part of the regeneration of Mountcharles.”

These community development plans need funding, and this is where ‘hardy men’ Joe Coyle and John McGroary come into the picture. They hope to raise a substantial amount with their endeavours.

Coyle continued: “The financial mess and its fall-out this country is currently facing may not be of our doing but we are jointly responsible to turn the tide, not just for us but for our children and our children’s children.

“The people of Mountcharles believe that the economic recovery of Ireland as a whole starts with little steps in villages like theirs.”

Joe Coyle and John McGroary are taking the first positive step towards a better future for us all. They have the full support of Mountcharles village behind them while they bravely take on their 10 Islands Challenge.
