The town of Raphoe bade farewell to one of its most popular residents on Saturday with the funeral Mass of Ambrose Gormley, Tullyvinney and formerly, Friel’s Hotel, Raphoe.

Ambrose, a long time barman at Friels Bar in Raphoe, died suddenly in Letterkenny General Hospital on Thursday night. A much loved and very well known person, Ambrose was highly respected by young and old alike in the town. His sudden death was met with deep shock by all who knew him.

Friels closed its doors as a mark or respect when news came through of Ambrose’s passing on Thursday. A number of local functions, including the Raphoe Town FC presentation night which was due to be held on Friday night, were also cancelled.

A large crowd turned out on the streets of Raphoe on Thursday night as Ambrose’s remains were removed for waking from Kellys Funeral Home at Oakfield to his sister Marie Laird’s residence at St. Eunan’s Terrace, Raphoe.

On Saturday morning, a minute’s silence was observed as the funeral cortege stopped outside Friels Hotel on way to St. Eunan’s Church for the funeral Mass. A guard of honour, made up of staff members at Friels from down the years, flanked the cortege from Friels to the church.

Fr. Dinny McGettigan officiated at the funeral Mass. Burial took place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
