“Fringe groups” not the answer to Cancer services

Reacting to a statement made yesterday morning by a Sligo Deputy that a meeting had been set up with the Minster of Health in relation to the restoration of Cancer services in Sligo, a Donegal politician said that “fringe groups” such as these are not the answer.

Deputy Pearse Doherty said, “There is already a good campaign group in situ which is non political and we are working very closely with them. This situation in Sligo General Hospital is not about politics or politicians, it is about people with life threatening diseases and I am not going to engage in political football.

“A separate fringe group of politicians as has been mooted is not the answer - it is the politicians who failed this campaign group in the past. The existing campaign group are perfectly capable of bringing this issue forward and with cross party and cross regional support from Oireachtas members this campaign will be much more effective.

“There is no room at this critical stage for people going off on a solo run.

“The strength in this issue is not the fact that it is Sligo - the strength is that it includes three counties and affects the lives of Cancer sufferers living in these counties.”
