Confusion has reigned this week about whether Donegal’s oldest person is the state’s oldest citizen.

Katie McMenamin from Rathmullan celebrated her 107th birthday during the summer.

Following the deaths of two of the country’s oldest citizens it was reported that Katie was the country’s oldest person.

Anastasia Kelly of Rathdowney, Co Laois, died on Friday aged 108 while Wexford-born Olivia Bree died on September 18th aged 109.

Áras an Uachtárain has since confirmed that Mrs. McMenamin is not the oldest person in the state, with that honour now going to Mary Kate Byrne of Maganey, Co Laois, who is five days older than Ms. McMenamin.

Ms. McMenamin celebrated her birthday in Aras Úi Domhnaill nursing home in Milford in August with her three children, grand children and great grand children.

She has attributed her long life to not drinking alcohol and eating home-grown vegetables.
